Straight Outta Swampton
Issue #1
THIS WEEK AT VRC
Greetings Villalobos Village!
Welcome to the very first edition of "Straight Outta Swampton"! I couldn't be more thrilled to have you join us on this wild ride. Whether you're a long-time supporter or a newbie to the Villalobos family, this newsletter is for YOU.
Now, let's get to the good stuff. We've got some recent news that'll tug at your heartstrings and make you grin. Drumroll, please...
We're packing our bags! Villalobos is moving to a bigger and better location right down the street from our old stomping grounds in New Orleans. It's a mix of bittersweet goodbyes and excited hellos, but we're ready for this new chapter.
But here's the kicker — it's also been a hard summer at VRC, between the brutal Louisiana heat and constant influx of dogs (even though we're at capacity), we're constantly just trying to keep up. Just a few days ago a pregnant mama was left tied to the fence of our old location and on Wednesday night she had her litter of new pups. It’s definitely a lot for the city staff to handle in the middle of the move.
In this newsletter you'll find all things VRC, from heartwarming rescue stories to pups waiting for your loving homes or sponsorship. And yes, you'll even get a sneak peek of our new show, Life With The Underdogs, exclusively on Rabid Reality. If you miss Pit Bulls & Parolees, you'll love Life With the Underdogs.
Enjoy this dive into the world of Villalobos Rescue Center. Together, we'll keep wagging those tails and changing lives.
Slobbers and Drools,
Tia Torres
THE ADOPTABLES
Latifah
Meet 5 year-old Latifah! Latifah is dog-friendly and loves water. She knows multiple commands, is calm, house-trained and an overall amazing dog.
Ambria
Meet 3.5 year-old Ambria! She is a fun and playful girl! She has lots of energy so someone with an active lifestyle would be perfect for her! She is very dog-friendly. If you have an existing dog they would have to be able to handle her rough and tumble play style! She has a training history and knows some commands like sit, leave it, hand targeting, and a few more! She rides well in the car, she loves baths and is a total water dog, loves toys and to play fetch, and she’s good at the vet! She can be a little shy with new men, but comes around pretty quickly! If you want a sweet girl who is always up to learn something new, this is the dog for you!

VRC SPONSOR PROGRAM
Gracias
GRACIAS NEEDS A SPONSOR
Gracias came in with serious leg injuries. The VRC team has been trying to save Gracias' leg for over a year, but after multiple vet visits and seeing that she was in too much pain, the vet recommended amputation.
Gracias is doing well post surgery. She is back at Villalobos recovering, and finally appears to be pain free! She is super lazy; a couch potato. M2 says Gracias acts like a queen who should be fed grapes at all times 😂 and if she doesn’t want to do something she won’t.

VRC dog sponsors get access to a private Facebook group moderated by Tia.
HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT RABID REALITY?
It is our new “network”, our new “Animal Planet“ (to give you a better example). Through this new online streaming network, we are creating our own shows so we can offer you something in place of Pit Bulls & Parolees. The hope is it will help raise donations so we can continue to keep Villalobos Rescue Center up and running, as it has for 30 years.
Life with the Underdogs is our new version of Pit Bulls & Parolees. It is a condensed version, BUT THE EXACT SAME STORIES & FORMAT: Adoption, rescue and a side story. Same dogs, same family, same parolees, same show, different title.
Click the above photo (or here) to watch one of our favorite episodes of Life with the Underdogs about the rescue of Sorrow. It’s free to watch, but if you want more episodes you can sign up for as little as $5/month to watch every episode and so many other shows and podcasts! To sign up or to check it out, click below or go to RabidReality.com
All monies/donations go 100% to the dogs of Villalobos!
When You Watch, They Eat!
CITY BEAT
Audria enjoying a cool down! | Amulet |
From City Manager Jenna: In New Orleans, the temperatures have finally dropped below boiling, but summer is not over yet! The dogs enjoy some water time to keep cool and we are looking forward to fall temperatures when we can play outside and have the most fun with our furry friends.
Four new dogs came in this week including Amulet, Coraline and Lurch; who are all scheduled for spay & neutering this week so we can get them acclimated and evaluated for adoption.
We are preparing Jubilee, who's been at the rescue for about 8 years, for adoption later this month and hoping he finally finds his forever home!
COUNTRY CORNER
Blush | Pinot |
From M2: Bunch of cuties came in to our Assumption Parish location this week including: Blush, a mini-Poodle puppy, Teal, a black Lab puppy and Pinot, a Pit Bull mix. They are all up for adoption already. We have a transport leaving soon with a bunch of adoptable dogs going to Pet Pack in Illinois. Mila, one of our country pups, had a meet and greet Sunday and she’s going to her home this week! It’s been hot out lately so we are making sure to keep the dogs and ourselves cool!
TEXAS SANCTUARY
Freya | Freya and Amy |
From Texas Manager Amy: Freya is one of our higher content wolf dogs here in Texas and she has natural resource guarding tendencies. Before entering her enclosure, when she first arrived, you would need to strip down anything loose she could steal off of you. But overtime she and I have just built a rapport to where she seems to respect me and my space in a way she never did before.
Today, Freya gets to trot around freely while I bring in her food, her bucket, etc… I can pull out my phone and touch it right to her nose and film her and she never tries to take it. She sits pretty for pictures when asked.
I credit a lot of her calmer behavior to her pack mate, Rollo, for giving her an outlet for all her energy and being able to match her play style and give her that companionship she needs, to where she doesn’t have to wrestle me anymore because she has him and can just let me love her.
WEST VIRGINIA WAYSTATION
Dutton | From Prison Dog Program Manager Dani: Dutton, an approximately 3.5 year-old German Shepherd, was dumped at one of our city locations in January. He was not a fan of strangers, but with patience Lizzy was able to get a leash on him and he quickly grew to love the VRC staff. He arrived at the West Virginia kennels in July and by August he made his way into our prison program. He had a really rough first day at the program, but the trainers were able to quickly gain his trust. He is now becoming a prison program favorite! |
LIZZY’S TRAINING TIP OF THE WEEK
HAND TARGETING
Step 1: Make sure your treat bag is on and your dog is engaged with you! |
Step 2: Present your open hand and as soon as your dog moves to explore or touches your hand, say “yes” to mark the behavior and then reinforce by giving a treat within a few seconds! If your dog does not offer the behavior you can lure them to your hand by tucking a treat between your thumb and palm. | Start with empty hand. Treat between thumb and palm. |
Step 3: Repeat step 2 until the behavior is reliable and then you can add the cue word “touch”! |
