Issue #4

THIS WEEK AT VRC

Happy Howl-o-Ween VRC Village!

It’s no secret that Halloween is my favorite holiday, but even though it’s a fun time of year and the weather here in Louisiana is finally cooling down, there’s no rest for the wicked. We’re just days away from finally moving out of the Claiborne warehouse. It’s a little bittersweet to be moving on, but this is a big step that’s been years in the making. While it had its fair share of issues, that building became a home for my kids, the parolees, the dogs and me, as well as a safe haven for the neglected dogs (and people) of New Orleans. The owner of the building is open to renting it out to another rescue group, so if you’re a rescue in need of a home, the warehouse will treat you well, just like it did us.

Speaking of things changing; for the first time in our history, Villalobos is going to be doing one-on-one cat adoptions, complete with applications, home checks and delivery. As you’ll read down below in M2’s Country Corner, we’re overflowing with cats and something had to be done. It’s new to us, so please give us time to sort things out. If you are interested in adopting a Kajun Kitty send an email to [email protected] and we’ll get you on our priority cat adopters list.

In better news, one of our long time residents Emoji is getting her shot at a forever home in Oklahoma this weekend. It’s been an almost a seven year journey for this former sponsor dog. She came to us from what we suspected to be a dog fighting ring and then had several medical set backs, but now she’s healed and headed for what may become her forever home. Emoji deserves an emoji 🥹

HOWL-O-WEEN HOOPLA

From L to R: Sweet Pea, Bria, Grandpa

Our staff loves dressing up some of the VRC dogs, well at least the ones that will play along, in Halloween costumes. If you’re dressing your dog up this week, CLICK HERE to add yours on Facebook, or tag @rabidreality in your post on Instagram. We’ll share your dogs in costume all Howl-o-ween long. While you’re at it, if you’re not already following Rabid Reality on Instagram and Facebook, do that too!

THE ADOPTABLES

Shibby

Meet 6 year-old Shibby! She is full of life. She is currently M2’s office dog so they spend a lot of time together. She loves water, is always happy, and loves to get the zoomies and flop in your lap. Shibby is dog friendly and great with people. She is a favorite around here. She is very loving, but can also be independent when you’re busy. She is the best of both worlds. Shibby is crate and house trained. She loves being M2’s office dog, but has her bags packed and is ready to find her permanent home.

Beaubette

Meet 11 year-old Beaubette. She has been with us for 8 years. Beaubette is super quiet, sweet, and would probably rather be the only dog in a home. She is good with kids, crate trained, very clean, loves car rides, sun bathing and napping in a soft bed. Beaubette would love to be a couch potato

VRC SPONSOR PROGRAM

Roux

ROUX NEEDS A SPONSOR

Roux is one of our hardcore “swampies.” He literally came out of the swamp as a stray. Being a Catahoula Leopard Dog (the official state dog), he won us over the second we met him. He’s about 9 years-old and has become the official “dog tester” for VRC. He is SO dog friendly and tolerant that we use him to test incoming dogs to see how they’ll interact with another dog. He has a permanent place with us and helps many dogs move forward with getting homes of their own.

Our monthly sponsorship program allows you to virtually “adopt” one of our dogs. While most of our dogs are here awaiting a home, some take longer than others to get a new home and they need a virtual friend while they are here. Sadly, others are not adoptable due to severe medical conditions and in some cases, severe emotional distress and are not able to leave our facility. As much as we want all of our dogs to get a home of their own, it is simply and sadly, not possible. The sponsor dog program helps cover the needs of our dogs while also giving them their own “virtual family.”

VRC dog sponsors get access to a private Facebook group moderated by Tia.

CITY BEAT

Vampirella

From City Managers Jenna and Kyle: Vampirella is a 3-month-old puppy who was dropped off a few weeks ago, and she needed blood transfusions to survive. She came in unresponsive and cold due to being infested with fleas and hookworms. She’s recovered now and loves toys and playing. She likes her sweaters so we are looking forward to dressing her up for Halloween!

The past few weeks have had amazing weather in New Orleans so the dogs are getting A LOT of time outside.

Mazikeen

Mazikeen had her meet and greet last week and got a home 🙌 , she should be going to her home locally next week after being at the rescue for a few years.

COUNTRY CORNER

Yelena and Olaf

From M2: This week we have a lot happening, we have had several dogs come in. A few of them were puppies. Two puppies came in together, our best guess is they are beagle or hound mixed. The female is named Yelena and the male is Olaf. They are both about 14 weeks old and very sweet! They do have some medical to go through before they can leave, but they will both be up for adoption or a transport candidate very soon!

We don’t just deal with dogs in the country anymore! We have stepped up and are taking on a much bigger role with the feral cat situation. Currently we are assisting in two different locations in our parish with about 40 plus cats that have continued to breed and need medical attention. We hope to get these numbers down and find homes for them after they are medically ready.

VRC SPOTLIGHT

IMPORTANCE OF DNA TESTING

If you've adopted a rescue dog, you may not know their breed or background. Consider using a DNA testing kit to uncover your dog’s genes. Knowing their breed makeup can provide valuable insights into their behavior, potential health risks, and dietary needs. It's a fun way to better understand your dog.

If you don’t know your dog’s DNA, but want to find out click right here and save up to $40 and get free shipping with code BESTDOG from Embark!

Click the image and save up to $40 on an Embark DNA Test!

Every so often we are going to spotlight an individual, organization or special dog story that caught our attention. If you have an idea for a future VRC Spotlight, email us at [email protected] 📧
