Straight Outta Swampton
Issue #5
THIS WEEK AT VRC
Greetings Villalobos Village!
As we drift into winter, it seems that the prior year's stash of blankets have disappeared into the Pit Bull abyss, never to be seen again. In other words....we are out of blankets for the dogs...ha!
We take new or used blankets, towels and sheets. We cannot take knitted or crocheted because the dog's toenails get caught up in them. But anything everything else goes! If you can spare any extras from your house or if you'd rather buy new ones, they can be shipped to: Villalobos Rescue Center 5541 Hwy 1, Napoleonville, LA. 70390 |
Keep reading 👇️ to see updates from our Texas, West Virginia and Kajun Kitties locations this week. Together, we'll keep wagging those tails and changing lives.
Slobbers and Drools,
Tia Torres
THE ADOPTABLES
Meet 3 ½ year-old Inlet! He is an old plott hound/ pit bull mix. Inlet is super dog friendly, confident and loves going for adventures! We recommend he be placed with kids older than 5 because he has energy that can be a bit much for younger children. He knows basic commands and wants to please. He is an all around sweet, loving boy.
Meet Peeve! She might be small, but she’s got a HUGE heart!! She is a typical pit bull who just absolutely loves people! She would prefer to be the only pet in the home because she just wants humans and to be the center of attention! Older kids only. She would love to snuggle up on the couch for a movie, intermissions should include belly rubs! She is well behaved, crate trained, and makes a great co-pilot for car rides!
CELL DOGS ADOPTABLE
With new episodes of Cell Dogs coming to Rabid Reality on Monday, we want to introduce you to Cell Dogs Adoptable, Peanuts! This silly guy has the heart of a puppy, the antics of a hound dog, and the personality of a circus clown. Peanuts is such a goofy guy who loves everyone he meets. Like so many of the dogs we get in through our New Orleans location, he came to us emaciated and in horrible shape, but he bounced back and is ready for a new home.
True to the typical pit bull personality, he is very outgoing and even enjoys playing with other dogs. We may have to place him as the only dog in the home due to some resource guarding with other dogs. But with the right owner, it could be managed.
Peanuts is also an "inmate" in our Underdogs Prison Dog Program and he is ready for parole. He has learned some pretty cool stuff and is ready to show off his skills!

VRC SPONSOR PROGRAM
Derek
DEREK NEEDS A SPONSOR
When he was just a little pup, we found Derek, and his brother Micey, tied to a fence in a vacant lot down in the Lower 9th Ward area of New Orleans. Sadly, both pups developed into dogs with behavioral issues and cannot be adopted out. Whether or not this was due to the horrible treatment they received from their former humans, they are still amazing with the VRC staff where they will remain under the protected arms of Villalobos.
To sponsor Derek, or any of the other dogs in our sponsor program, click below. New Sponsor Dogs are being added to the program soon! Keep an eye out here for an announcement about the new sponsor dogs.
Our monthly sponsorship program allows you to virtually “adopt” one of our dogs. While most of our dogs are here awaiting a home, some take longer than others to get a new home and they need a virtual friend while they are here. Sadly, others are not adoptable due to severe medical conditions and in some cases, severe emotional distress and are not able to leave our facility. As much as we want all of our dogs to get a home of their own, it is simply and sadly, not possible. The sponsor dog program helps cover the needs of our dogs while also giving them their own “virtual family.”
VRC dog sponsors get access to a private Facebook group moderated by Tia.

TEXAS SANCTUARY
From Texas Manager Amy: Everyone’s favorite, Baloo aka Black, had his yearly vet visit this week. He is still shy about the idea of being indoors but other than that, he loaded in and out of the van like a pro and pranced right into the office for his visit and hopped on the scale to reveal a whopping 82 lbs. of big boy to love. He even seemed disappointed when the Dr. stopped examining him and tried to follow him to the back of the clinic.
In other news, we got a driveway!! Moe did the spreading. No more getting stuck in the mud and having to pull myself out with the side by side just to make it to the vet.
WEST VIRGINIA WAYSTATION
From Prison Dog Program Manager Dani: It’s been a busy couple of weeks here in West Virginia. We’ve been working with the guys in the prison program to get the group of dogs there ready for adoption but have also been spending lots of time working with the other dogs here with us up on our beautiful mountain. While we want more than anything to get our prison dogs adopted, we also want to highlight two of our very special residents, Zippy and Posey.
Zippy came into rescue sometime around July of 2014. Later that year in November, Posey arrived. Both were roughly around a year old at the time. Even though they were strangers, they grew to be extremely close, and eventually inseparable. They have traveled from Louisiana to West Virginia together, and their bond remains...all this time later.
Posey
Posey is an extremely soft, shy, and gentle dog at first, but once she gets to know and trust you, she gives you her whole heart. When she feels safe she's a really fun, playful, outgoing girl. She's afraid of extremely loud noises and big storms, and she would love nothing more than to have someone to comfort and help her through those moments in a home of her own.
Zippy
Zippy on the other hand, isn't phased by much of anything. He definitely loves Posey, but he would sell her out in a New York minute for a treat! This guy loves his food, and anyone else's he can get a hold of. This means if you give him a treat, you've got his full attention. Give this handsome fella a little bit of attention, a little affection, and some treats, and his life is complete.
As senior dogs, they are both eligible for our senior dog adoption program (We help cover medical costs for our senior kiddos after adoption. If you haven't heard about it, ask! ). Consider giving Posey and Zippy a chance to move from Louisiana to West Virginia, and finally one day to their furever home where they will know what it is to be loved, safe and protected in a HOME.
KAJUN KITTIES
From Kitty Kween Jenny: Just yesterday we dropped off 20 kittens to Pope Memorial in Concord, NH. On top of taking in cats and kittens that people find, we are also helping an elderly gentleman that's been caring for the cats outside his home that keep multiplying. There's approximately 40 cats in this colony. So far, with the help of a resident of the community trapping, we have been able to take in about 15 adult cats, and three 6-week old kittens. We are currently getting to know them.
Next week, we are going to start helping a woman who has about 50 cats in and around her home. As well as continuing to help the cats of Assumption Parish.
We have multiple adult cats of all ages and personalities available for adoption. If you are interested in adopting a Kajun Kitty you can email us at [email protected]
Or, if you want to adopt directly from Pope Memorial you can click the button below.
LIZZY’S TRAINING TIP OF THE WEEK
Lying Down
Step 1: Take a piece of food and while your dog is sitting, put the food in front of their nose and slowly lure them to the down position. Step 2: As soon as their body is all the way down, click or say “yes” and give them the piece of food. Step 3: Reset them for another repetition by asking them to sit or tossing a piece of food away to get them back up. Step 4: Once they get the hang of it you can stop using a piece of food and try just using your finger to lure them into the down position. Step 5: Add the cue word “down” right before you click and treat! | Step 1 Step 2 Step3 Step 4 |
